The story of the Breed House in Midland, Michigan, is one of architectural vision intertwining with personal history. Designed by Jackson B. Hallett, this home beautifully reflects the enduring bond between the Breed and Hallett families, who have been friends for generations.
Charles Breed, with a profound appreciation for the architectural style of Alden B. Dow, was naturally drawn to Hallett's work, known for its clear lines and functional elegance. When it came time to design their family home, the Breeds saw in Hallett not just an architect, but a collaborator who could bring their vision to life—a spacious and welcoming home.

Building the Breed House was a journey of creativity and hands-on effort. The Breeds chose a sloping site, which, though unusual for the area and initially causing delays, ultimately added to the home's unique character. Living in the unfinished house for a year, the Breeds themselves installed roof shingles, crafted cabinets, and painted, infusing the home with their personal touch.

The house features enduring brick walls, a practical two-car garage, and an expansive screened porch. The landscaping, initially a cost-saving endeavor, grew into a passion for Charles, reflecting his artistic background and becoming an integral part of the home’s aesthetic.

Architecturally, the house embodies the principles of "modesty and simplicity" as highlighted by John Burroughs, whose philosophies influenced the design. The living room, designed with the concept of "negative beauty," doesn't overwhelm but complements its natural surroundings, providing a tranquil backdrop to family life. Intimate spaces like the cozy nook with a hanging sofa lamp and the sitting area beneath the living room's ledge offer comforting retreats framed by expansive windows.
